Description of the genus

Perennials. Inflorescence a single terminal ± secund raceme; spikelets in 2 rows. Spikelets 2-many-flowered, laterally compressed, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets. Glumes 1-nerved (rarely upper 3-nerved), persistent. Lemmas 3-nerved, membranous, glabrous.

Worldwide: 20 species in the Old World tropics with 1 in tropical America
