Description of the genus

Annual non-aromatic eglandular herbs. Young stems and leaves with vesicular trichomes becoming totally collapsed when dry, mostly caducous or rarely present at maturity. Leaves alternate. Flowers bisexual and female, in small cymes arranged in a branched inflorescence. Bracteoles 0. Perianth segments (4-)5-lobed, with a prominent midvein visible within. Stamens 5.

Derivation of name: from the genus Chenopodium and the Latin suffix -astrum, meaning having a resemblance to.
