Description of the genus

Herbs, not smelling of onions. Rootstock a bulb. Flowers in umbels, subtended by a spathe of 2 bracts connate at the base. Perianth funnel-shaped, without a corona; segments connate at base into a short tube. Stamens and style straight. Capsule membranous. Seeds angled, not winged, black.

Worldwide: 20 species in America; some species naturalised in Europe, Australia and Africa

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
