Description of the genus

Terrestrial herbs with tubers. Leaves 1-2, radical, appressed to ground, sessile, ovate or circular. Scape erect, unbranched. Flowers sessile or ± so, often secund. Sepals subequal, free, green. Petals entire or lobed, often fleshy. Lip lobed or toothed, spurred, adnate to column at base. Column very short. Pollinia granular; caudicles very short; viscidia small, naked.

Worldwide: 50-60 species in trop. Africa, South Africa and trop. Arabia.
