Description of the genus

Dioecious trees. Stipules lateral, free. Leaves distichous. Flowers unisexual. Inflorescences in the lower leafless nodes of lateral branches. Male inflorescences spicate; perianth segments 4, basally connate; stamens 4. Female inflorescences capitate; stigmas 2. Fruiting perianth enlarged, fleshy. Fruit free, somewhat drupaceous.

Worldwide: c.12 species in temperate and warm areas and tropical Africa

Zimbabwe: 2 taxa.
