Description of the genus

Dioecious trees or shrubs, without milky latex. Stipules present. Leaves alternate, simple, entire with domatia. Inflorescence (in ours) spicate, densely-flowered. Male flowers: calyx 3-5-lobed; lobes imbricate; petals 0; stamens 3-5; pistillode small or 0. Female flowers: calyx as male; petals 0; disk annular or cup-shaped; ovary 1(-2)-locular with 2 ovules per loculus; styles (2-)3(-5). Fruit drupaceous, indehiscent, 1-locular, laterally flattened, often oblique, usually red or black; endocarp pitted. Seeds 1(-2), ecarunculate

Worldwide: c. 170 species in Old World tropics and warm areas, especially Asia
