Description: |
Evergreen shrub or small tree, sometimes scrambling, often with spreading or drooping branches. Young branches pubescent, becoming hairless with age. Leaves leathery, elliptic-oblanceolate with a distinct acuminate driptip, dark glossy green above, paler or sometimes rusty brownish beneath, usually hairless except for the midrib and main veins; stipules linear to narrowly elliptic, up to 15 mm long, pubescent. Male inflorescences terminal or subterminal on lateral shoots, up to 13 cm long. Female inflorescences similar, unbranched. Fruit ellipsoid, strongly compressed, green to whitish at first then red to purple-black when ripe. |

Derivation of specific name: | vogelianum: after either Julius Rudolph Theodor Vogel (1812-1841) or his brother Eduard Vogel, co-director of the Bonn Botanical Gardens. Both were German, explorers, botanists and plant collectors. |
