Description of the genus

Dioecious, or rarely monoecious, shrubs or small trees. Indumentum simple. Buds perulate. Leaves alternate, petiolate, simple, subentire to dentate or lobed, palminerved. Inflorescences terminal, interruptedly racemose or subpaniculate; bracts small, 1–several-flowered. Male flowers with pedicels jointed; calyx closed in bud, later splitting into 2–5 valvate lobes; petals (4-)5, short, free, imbricate; disk glands 5, free, alternating with the petals. Female flowers: pedicels jointed; sepals 5, free, subequal, imbricate; petals 5, short, free, imbricate; disk shallowly cupular, with small lobes; ovary 3-locular, with 1 ovule per loculus. Fruits 3-lobed, dehiscing septicidally into 3 bivalved cocci; endocarp thinly woody. Seeds with crustaceous testa; endosperm fleshy; cotyledons broad, flat.

Worldwide: One species in eastern Africa.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
