Description: |
A loosely caespitose perennial or annual. Culms 25-90(110) cm. tall, erect or ascending, often rooting at the lower nodes, 2-several-noded. Leaf-sheaths tight at first, later becoming loose and sometimes slipping off the culm. Leaf-laminae 6-25 x 0.2-0.5 cm., usually expanded, but sometimes tightly folded, flaccid, pale green. Panicle 5-35 x 1-3 cm., slightly drooping, somewhat contracted, narrowly oblong to elliptic-oblong in outline. Spikelets 2-2.5 mm. long, pale-green or silvery-green sometimes tinged with purple, somewhat glossy, gaping. Glumes persistent, determining the length of the spikelet, narrowly lanceolate-acute, strongly keeled, flanks smooth or slightly granular, keels scabrid. Lemma 1.5 — 2.25 mm. long, 3-nerved, awnless or with the central nerve excurrent into a short subapical bristle up to 0.5 mm. long, ovate-oblong when expanded, dorsally pilose or pubescent, rarely glabrous, apex denticulate; callus bearded with hairs of varying length. Palea not much shorter than the lemma. Anthers 0.5-0.8 mm. long, oblong. |
