Description:
A perennial, with a short horizontal rhizome, usually inconspicuously pubescent all over, often appearing glabrous. Culm 20-80 cm. tall, few-6-noded, very slender, wiry, arising from a bulbous base, usually branched a few cm. above the base, usually erect, rarely geniculately ascending. Leaf-sheaths rather tight, finely striate, the lowermost long-persistent. Leaf-laminae 5-20(25) x 0·1-0·3 cm., almost always convolute, filiform, very rarely expanded, tapering to a fine point, somewhat rigid, obliquely ascending to erect, usually smooth. Panicle 1.5-12 cm. long, dense, spike-like, compact, rarely interrupted, light to dark grey. Spikelets 3.5-4.5 mm. long, 3-flowered, crowded. Glumes slightly unequal, scattered-pilose, subacute; the inferior 2.5-5 mm. long, 3-7-nerved, ovate; the superior 3.4-7 mm. long, 3-6-nerved, oblong. Fertile lemma (the inferior) c. 2 mm. long (excluding the awns), dorsally villous; awns 2-3.5 mm. long, plumose beyond the middle. Anthers (0.8)1.2-2.2 mm. long.

Habitat: Mostly in Colophospermum mopane woodland, but also in scrub and open grassland, growing in arid conditions, amongst limestone pebbles, on basaltic soil, also on sandy hill-slopes and along roads
