Perennial tufted grass, up to 1.2 m. Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets straw-coloured to pinkish, large, oval and conspicuously flattened with typically serrated edges.
Derivation of specific name: superba: superb, proud
Habitat: In deciduous woodland, mostly in sandy soils, sometimes on termite mounds. Also along roadsides in disturbed soil.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 1550 m
Flowering time:Aug - May
Worldwide distribution: Sudan southwards to South Africa
Zimbabwe distribution: N,W,C,E,S
