Erect perennial tufted grass, up to 1 m. Inflorescence of many short racemes at almost right angles with the culm. Spikelets reddish-brown with sharp-tipped glumes.
Derivation of specific name: squarrosa: squarrose
Habitat: In disturbed places, roadsides and old cultivation. Also in sandy soils and on granite.
