Description:
Robust perennial sedge, mostly 50-100 cm, tall, growing from a shortly creeping rhizome. Leaves basal, spreading, grass-like, linear, flat or folded, basal sheaths up to 10 cm long, dark purple below, pale brown higher up. Inflorescence a large terminal subcapitate head of clusters of spikelets, cream to pale yellow.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: hemisphaericus: in a half sphere; referring to the shape of the inflorescence.
Habitat: In grassland and woodland, often along roadsides.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 1700 m
Flowering time:Nov - Dec
Worldwide distribution: Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe distribution: N,W,C,E,S
