Description: |
Large terrestrial herb, up to 3 m tall, growing from a rhizome with stout whitish roots. Leaves 3-5, lanceolate to oblanceolate, 30-250 cm long, petiolate, ribbed, evergreen. Inflorescence rather laxly several- to many-flowered. Sepals olive-green to purple-brown, more or less erect; petals white, pink or purple-pink, broadly ovate-elliptic, overlying the column; lip 3-lobed with side lobes erect green, purple-veined, mide-lobe purple with 3 creamy-yellow crests; spur, 4-10 mm long conical. |

Derivation of specific name: | horsfallii: After Thomas Berry Horsfall (1805-1878), nineteenth century British politician who cultivated the type material, collected in West Africa, in his glasshouse in England. |
Habitat: | In wet and swampy places in riverine and evergreen forest, along streams and vleis and at the base of mountain slopes. |
