Description:
Scrambling or creeping perennial herb, rooting at the nodes. Stems up to several meters long, reddish-purple, hairy when young. Leaves opposite, ovate, upper surface slightly rough, under surface with long soft hairs on the veins. Flowers unisexual in small mixed axillary clusters (involucres), appearing as a single larger perianth. Fruit a very small nut, enclosed in the papery remains of the perianth.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: iners: inert (probably referring to the absence of stinging hairs)
Habitat: Along the fringes of evergreen forest and plantations, usually in shade.
Altitude range: (metres) 1350 - 1850 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Cameroon, Bioko, eastern DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Kwazulu-Natal, Eastern Cape South Africa. Also in Yemen.
