Frequency: Locally common in parts of the E Highlands (mainly the Nyanga area - see note below)
Status: Native
Description:
Straggling shrub or small tree with greyish foliage. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate; leaflets obovate with coarsely toothed margins; lower surface grey-green, densely covered in silky hairs. Flowers in silky, dense terminal sprays, greenish. Fruit a cluster of small nuts enclosed in the persistent remnants of the calyx.
Notes: Most common in the Nyanga area of the E Highlands but there are also specimens in SRGH from the Mutare area, Banti and the Himalayas and also further south from Chimanimani District.
Derivation of specific name: sericea: with silky appressed hairs, sericeous
Habitat: On slopes in montane grassland and along streams, where it may form dense stands.
