Description:
Medium-sized deciduous tree. Bark greyish-brown, rough; young branchlets hairy. Leaves with 4-7 pairs of pinnae; leaflets in 8-17 pairs per pinna, oblong, symmetrical; petiole with a gland just above the base. Flowers in rather small, semi-spherical heads; stamens up to 1.3 cm long, white fading to pink. Pods with conspicuous raised veins, large, up to 32 × 7 cm, crimson, turning brown with age, indehiscent.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: zimmermannii: after Philipp Wilhelm Albrecht Zimmermann, 1860-1931, botanist in Tanzania.
Habitat: In woodland, riverine and gorge forest.
Altitude range: (metres) 400 - 820 m
Flowering time:Sep - Oct
Worldwide distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and northern Zimbabwe.
