Status: Native in western Zimbabwe; also introduced near Harare
Description:
Shrub or small tree to 5 m. Prickles paired, sometimes ± scattered. Branchlets purplish-brown and pubescent with red-brown glands. Leaves: petiole up to 1.3 cm long with a conspicuous stalked gland; lamina with 10-14 pairs of pinnae; leaflets 1-4 mm long, pubescent. Flowers in short spikes, cream-coloured. Pods dehiscent, conspicuously densely pubescent.
Notes: This species occurs naturally in a fairly small area in the Matopos-Bulawayo region (Timberlake, 1999). There is also a record from grassland near to Harare where it appears that the trees were either planted or accidentally introduced,
Derivation of specific name: hereroensis: from Hereroland in Namibia, inhabited by the Herero people.
Habitat: Dry rocky woodland.
