Description: |
Shrub, 1-3 m tall, sometimes a suffrutex up to 0.4 m or a small tree up to 4 m or scrambling to 10 m. Formerly treated as a subspecies of Bauhinia petersiana. We have followed Schmidt (2012) in treating it as a separate species. It is easily distinguished from Bauhinia petersiana subsp. petersiana. The petals are much wider and more rounded, while the style and stamens are considerably shorter and lack the red tinge of subsp. petersiana. It also is a generally much smaller shrub, which rarely reaches tree-size proportions. |
