Description:
Tree up to 20 m with a rounded crown. Leaves imparipinnate; leaflets (7-)9(-11), opposite or subopposite, 3-7 × 2-4 cm, broadly ovate to sometimes lanceolate to elliptic, glabrous above, minutely pubescent beneath and becoming glabrous, slightly asymmetric at the base; apex bluntly acuminate. Flowers borne in brown-pubescent panicles. Buds 4-6 mm long. Sepals usually 5, brown, pubescent, often reflexed in flower. Petals 5, small, 1-1.5 mm long. Stamens 5, sometimes with up to 5 staminodes. Fruits 2-4 cm long, brown-pubescent or -tomentose, laterally flattened, the style base persisting as a beak or short point. Seeds 1 per fruit, shiny, ± lens-shaped.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: englerianum: named after Dr Prof Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler (1844-1930), German Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Berlin, who initiated extensive botanical exploration in Africa.
Habitat: In woodland on Kalahari sand.
