Common names: Mexican lupin (English)

Status: Introduced
Erect annual or short-lived perennial, up to 1 m. Stems with long spreading hairs over a denser pubescence; leaves palmate with 7-9 narrowly oblong-elliptic leaflets, crowded near the base of the plant; flowers in racemes up to 50 cm, mostly blue, sometimes pink or white; the fruits are pods held semi-erect along the old flowering stem.
Notes: Introduced as a garden ornamental, it was first recorded as an escape in October 1970 and is now a common but localised weed on roadsides in the northern suburbs of Harare.
Derivation of specific name: mexicanus: of Mexico.
Habitat: A roadside weed, often in damp places.
Altitude range: (metres) 900 - 1510 m
