Description:	See aggregate species page for general details. This variety is distinguished by unbranched, mostly terminal inflorescences with pedicels up to 1 cm long. Leaves are usually less than 6.5 cm long and the winged petiole up to 3 cm long. At least 7 varieties have been described and many characters are not easy to recognize in the field particularly when plants are not flowering. Some characters are also known to merge between certain varieties in certain areas.
Notes:	Var. pteropus is the only variety that has been recorded from Zimbabwe.
Derivation of specific name:	pteropus: winged, referring to the winged petiole.
Habitat:	Brachystegia woodland, associated grassland and margins of dambos.
Altitude range: (metres)	1050 - 2250 m
Flowering time:	Aug - Nov
Worldwide distribution:	Angola, DRC (Katanga) Burundi and Tanzania south through Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
