Description: |
Small evergreen tree with large, brittle, ovate to obovate leaves. Leaves often distinctly curled over from the midrib in the shape of a saddle. Flowers unisexual, often, but not always, sexes on different trees. Fruits orange-yellow. |
Notes: | Fruits edible and particularly sought after by local people. |
Derivation of specific name: | kirkiana: named after Dr John Kirk, who accompanied David Livingstone on his Zambezi expedition of 1858 |
Habitat: | In Brachystegia woodland where it may be one of the co-dominant species. |
