Description:
Perennial herb, with annual stems, up to 70 cm tall, growing from a woody rhizomatous rootstock. Leaves ovate-rhombic to ovate-lanceolate, up to 14 × 5 cm, 5-9-veined from the base, more or less hairy on both surfaces particularly on the veins, sometimes also glandular pubescent above; margin finely toothed or almost entire; petiole 1-3 cm long. Stipules 5-8 mm long, linear, glandular pubescent. Flowers unisexual in separate inflorescences, usually on the same plant. Female inflorescence a terminal spike, up to 10 cm long; flowers singly held in ovate boat-shaped bracts, densely covered in sticky stalked glands. Male inflorescences axillary, up to 18 cm long, densely-flowered; flowers minute, greenish, sometimes flushed reddish. Fruit 3 × 4 mm, deeply 3-lobed, sparingly pubescent, dark green.

Habitat: Occurring in miombo woodland, mixed deciduous woodland or wooded grassland, often on stony or sandy soils.
