Description:
Shrub or rarely a small, multi-stemmed tree, armed with strong straight thorns, up to 8 cm. Leaves in fascicles, often on the spines, elliptic to obovate, 1-5 cm long, softly textured and finely hairy; midrib raised on both surfaces; margin shallowly crenate. Flowers in axillary clusters, often on the spines, white or cream, c. 1 cm in diameter. Fruit 3-lobed, c. 5 mm in diameter, persistent styles forming 3 points, orange-pink, dehiscent.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: putterlickioides: like a Putterlickia sp.
Habitat: In dry deciduous woodland, often on termite mounds, sometimes forming impenetrable thickets.
Altitude range: (metres) 200 - 1600 m
Flowering time:Sep - Nov
Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, South Africa.
