Description: |
Shrub or small tree. Leaves elliptic-oblong to ovate, up to c. 9.5 cm long, distinctly asymmetric at the base, green to grey-green and more or less hairy above, covered in dense silvery-white velvety hairs below; margins irregularly toothed. Flowers in terminal and axillary clusters, yellow, c. 1.5 cm in diameter. Fruits 1-2-lobed, 7-10 mm in diameter, yellow to red when ripe. |
Notes: | Fruits edible and used either fresh or sun-dried and fermented to brew beer. |
Derivation of specific name: | monticola: mountain-loving; so-called because the species was described from specimens collected in the Magaliesberg. |
Habitat: | In open woodland and riverine fringes. |
