Description:
This subspecies is distinguished by the appressed pubescence or pubescence being almost absent and relatively large flowers.
Notes: See subsp. brevisepala and subsp. sessiliflora for comparison.
Derivation of specific name: octovalvis: with 8 valves, referring to the way the fruit splits into 8 irregular parts
Habitat: In moist places, often in cultivated fields.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 1500 m

Worldwide distribution: Pantropical but in Africa known from Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and eastern South Africa.
