Description:
Robust shrubby herb up to several meters tall, often woody near the base, most parts with more or less dense spreading hairs. Leaves linear or lanceolate, 2-9 cm long; petiole up to 10 mm long. Flowers, axillary, yellow; sepals 4, ovate, up to 6 mm long, petals 4, obovate, up to 8 mm long, notched at the apex; stamens 8. Fruit a capsule up to 45 mm long, terete, with 8 darker ribs, crowned by the remaining calyx lobes.
Notes: See subsp. octovalvis and subsp. sessiliflora for comparison.
Derivation of specific name: octovalvis: with 8 valves in the capsule;
brevispala: with short sepals.
Habitat: On moist ground near lakes and along rivers and streams.

Worldwide distribution: (This subspecies) Widespread in tropical Africa, Cape Verde Islands, São Tomé and probably introduced in Madagascar.
