Description:
Shrub or small tree, 2-7 m, or sometimes a suffrutex, less than 1m tall. Bark greyish, rough and fissured, flaking in thick pieces. Leaves elliptic up to 12 × 4 cm, densely hairy below. Flowers in dense, branched axillary heads, greenish-white or cream, most parts covered in dense rusty woolly hairs. Fruit in clusters, round c. 7 mm in diameter, sometimes rusty hairy, red to black.
Notes: Many subspecies have been described, subsp. acutifolia being common and widespread in Zimbabwe. Subsp. angustifolia is only found in the extreme south of the country.
Derivation of specific name: natalensis: of Natal, South Africa; acutifolia: with acute (pointed) leaves.
Habitat: In woodland and thickets, often on rocky outcrops, river banks or termite mounds.
