Description: |
Large perennial climber or liana with milky latex. Stems up to 20 m long, hairless, pale brown, verrucose, flaky. Leaves broadly ovate, 9–14 cm long, 5–11 cm wide, somewhat discolorous; petiole up to 7 cm long. Inflorescences 10–30-flowered; peduncles 1–3 cm long, pedicles 4–5 mm long. Sepals sub-orbicular, 2 mm long and wide. Corolla hairless outside; tube campanulate, 5–6 mm long, inside of mouth papillate; lobes broadly elliptic to broadly ovate, spreading, 6–7 mm long and wide, inside papillate, pink, maroon, dark red or violet to deep violet. Corona set in lower half of corolla tube; lobes violet to maroon, 2 mm long. Follicles vary narrowly deltoid-ellipsoid to deltoid-ovoid, 2-edged, 11–25 cm long, 2–4 cm diameter, hairless. |
Notes: | Known only from one dying location on the Runde River in Gonarezhou National Park; only one plant seen recently. Flowers or fruit in Zimbabwe unknown since all specimens so far collected have been sterile and the exact identity of the plants in our region still need further confirmation but should be this species. |
