Description:
Somewhat fleshy, aromatic perennial herb 30-100 cm high, rarely taller when scrambling and supported. Stems quadrangular, often purplish, prostrate or scrambling, set with purplish, spreading hairs and glands. Leaves fleshy, spreading, triangular-ovate, 15-75 mm long, with numerous sessile glands beneath; margin coarsely crenate-serrate, weakly rolled under, sometimes purplish; petiole 10-30 mm long. Inflorescence lax usually purplish, with 6-12-flowered whorls up to 30 mm apart; pedicels 3-6 mm long. Calyx 3-4 mm long with purple hairs and red sessile glands. Corolla pale blue to mauve, often with dark purple markings, 8-16 mm long; lobes with purplish hairs and red sessile glands. lower lip boat-shaped, 6-12 mm long, longer than upper lip.
Notes: This species is native in East Africa and apparently has been introduced in Eastern Zimbabwe. It is however not common or weedy and regularly found in otherwise little undisturbed natural environments.

Habitat: Amongst rocks at high altitudes.
Altitude range: (metres) 1500 - 2000 m

Worldwide distribution: DRC, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Kenya and northern Tanzania. Introduced in eastern Zimbabwe.
