Description: |
Shrub or small tree. Leaves opposite, mostly hairless, elliptic to oblanceolate with a distinct driptip. The veining is prominent below, veins and petiole often pinkish red, young leaves pink. Flowers in dense axillary clusters, bell-shaped, creamy white, mottled with pink; corolla with silky hairs on the outside. Fruit fleshy, brown to black when ripe, remains of the old calyx teeth persistent. |

Derivation of specific name: | diervilleoides: named for the resemblance of the flowers to Diervillea florida, now Weigela florida, in the Caprifoliaceae. Diervillea commemorates N. Dierville, a 17th century French surgeon. |
