Description: |
Much-branched shrubby perennial, up to 1 m tall. Leaves sessile, oblong-ovate, up to 1.5 × 1 cm, 3-veined from the base, densely grey velvety on both surfaces. Capitula in terminal, many-headed corymbose cymes. Involucral bracts 5-seriate, ovate-oblong, 2.5 mm, pale yellow or rarely purplish. Florets bright yellow; flowerheads turning straw-coloured when older. |
Notes: | Although this species is still listed in most taxonomic databases under the genus name Calomeria, other sources list Calomeria as a monotypic genus from Australia with the single species C. amaranthoides Vent, a shrub-like plant that bears little or no resemblance to C. africana. |
Derivation of specific name: | africanum: of Africa, an odd name for this particular species since it is a very narrow endemic and not widespread in Africa at all. |
