Description:
Soft, scrambling or shrub-like perennial herb. Stems 4-angled with a line of purple hairs at the nodes. Leaves broadly ovate, upper surface dark green with short bristly hairs, veining conspicuously sunken; under surface paler grey-green with purple hairs along the veins; margin very irregularly lacerated, as if torn. Inflorescences, branched at the ends of branches. Flowers white with pink or mauve markings in the upper lip.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: swynnertonii: named after Charles Francis Massey Swynnerton (1877-1938), well-known naturalist, who first recorded and collected many species of flora and fauna in and around the Chirinda Forest
Habitat: In the understorey and along the margins of evergreen forest.
Altitude range: (metres) 500 - 1800 m
Flowering time:Nov - May
Worldwide distribution: Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Mpumalanga South Africa.
