Description of the genus

Lianes. Tendrils 2-fid. Leaves compound, pedately 3-7-foliolate. Male flowers many, in racemes. Female flowers solitary; stigma 3-lobed. Petals 2-3.5 cm, large, purplish, fringed with filaments. Fruit large, 30 - 90 cm, ribbed, ellipsoid with base lobed and expanded. Seeds large, broadly ovate to ± circular, flattened.

Worldwide: 3 species in the tropics

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
