Evergreen shrubs and small trees. Leaves large, alternate, strongly veined. Flowers white, in terminal panicles. Calyx lobes 5, persistent at apex of fruit. Petals 5, long-clawed. Ovary inferior. Ovules 2 per loculus. Fruit a pome with 1, 2 or few large seeds. Derivation of name: from Greek: erion meaning wool and botrys, a bunch of grapes, alluding to the woolly inflorescences. Worldwide: 26 species from Himalayas to E Asia to W Malesia. Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
