Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees. Leaves toothed. Flowers bisexual, axillary, in few-flowered fascicles or racemes. Sepals 4-6, free. Petals 0. Stamens very numerous, not in bundles. Stigma peltate. Fruit a fleshy berry.

Worldwide: 2 species in tropical Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene islands.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
