Description: A spreading beautiful tree, with broad horizontal branches, briefly deciduous. Bark grey, smoothish, to flaking in roundish disks, the trunk and branches showing characteristic rounded bulges. Dormant axillary buds globose. Leaves with rhachis narrowly channelled at first; leaflets glabrous, in 9–23 pairs, varying from 9–16 to 14–18, the number exhibiting clinal variation, small, asymmetrical, middle pairs the largest, 10–30 × 2–10 mm, oblong-lanceolate, sometimes somewhat falcate; apex rounded to obtuse, sometimes minutely apiculate; base obliquely rounded or truncate to subcordate; midveins almost central; petiole 2–6 mm long. Flowers in short terminal heads, small and inconspicuous, creamy-white; petals absent. Pods 8—13 cm long, hairless, dark brown to purplish in colour.
Notes: Although closely related to B. microphylla that species has more, 25-72, pairs of smaller, 5–15 × 1–2 mm leaflets and occurs in rocky foothills and escarpments in high rainfall and mist-belt areas.
