Common names: Butterfly bush (English) Orange eye (English) Summer lilac (English)
Description: Somewhat scrambling shrub up to 3 m. high. Branchlets sub-quadrangular, stellate–hairy when young, later becoming hairless. Leaves opposite or subopposite, narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic, 3–6 times as long as wide, 4–20 cm long; margin serrate to subentire; petiole short; stipules leaf-like, often only present on main branches. Inflorescence terminal, long and rather narrow, 10–30 cm long, many–flowered. Flowers pedicellate or sometimes sessile. Calyx 2–3·5 mm long, outside stellate–hairy to hairless. Corolla violet or lilac, orange–yellow within the throat. Capsule narrowly ellipsoid or narrowly ovoid, 5–9 mm long.
Derivation of specific name: davidii: named after Father Armand David (1826-1900), French missionary and explorer in China, who was the first European to report the shrub.
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Native in China and Japan, but cultivated all over the world. It is rarely found naturalized in our region.
Growth form(s): Shrub over 2 m.
