Synonyms:
Common names: Coastal strelitzia (English) Natal wild banana (English)
Description: Evergreen multi-stemmed tree to 12 m. Leaves very large, up to 2 m. Inflorescence compound with one spathe after another arising out of the preceding one up to a total of about 5, each spathe with its group of flowers at right angles to those above and below so that a column with five layers of flowers result. Sepals white. Petals blue. Seeds black with a bright orange woolly aril.

Derivation of specific name: nicolai: for the Grand duke Nikolai Nikolaievich the elder, third son of Czar Nicholas I of Russia
Flowering time:All year.
Worldwide distribution: Coastal South Africa (Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal), Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
