Description of the genus
Perennial herbs or soft shrubs. Leaves dentate. Inflorescences axillary or terminal spike-like cymes. Bracteoles 2, linear, as long as calyx. Calyx divided almost to base into 5 linear lobes. Corolla distinctly 2-lipped. Fertile stamens 4, exserted; stamens 2-thecous. Style 1, filiform. Capsule with 3 or more seeds per loculus, the seeds borne on retinacula. Worldwide: 4-5 species in tropical Africa Zimbabwe: 3 taxa. |
