Description of the genus

Bulbous herbs. Leaves linear to lorate, produced with or after the flowers. Scape hollow. Inflorescence of 1-4 flowers, subtended by 2 free bracts. Flowers narrowly funnel-shaped, suberect to nodding. Stamens inserted in the corolla tube. Ovary 3-locular; style 3-lobed. Fruit a loculicidal capsule. Seeds black, flattened, winged.

Derivation of name: from Greek: kyrtos meaning curved, anthos, a flower, referring to the curved perianth tube.

Worldwide: 47 species in tropical and South Africa.

Zimbabwe: 5 taxa.
