Description

Levasflor is a Swedish owned, Mozambican forestry company managing since 2005 a hardwood forest concession of 47 000 ha, playing a key role in the country’s shift to sustainable forestry. It is one of the few FSC certified companies in the Mozambican natural timber industry for both Forest Management and Chain of Custody (FSC-C005219). It is leading the way for others in the country and contributing to the national debate of the change that needs to happen. LevasFlor takes sustainability and social responsibility to heart. With a low intensive selective felling, LevasFlor only takes out a few cubic meters per hectare, and leave an ever-growing standing timber stock in the forest. LevasFlor has reforestation and fire protection programs, as well as a team of rangers constantly patrolling the boundaries for illegal loggers and poachers. Examples of hands on solutions are honey production where the strategic placement of bee hives creates an incentive for the local population to keep fires out of the forest. LevasFlor monitors its wildlife in a collaboration with the Gorongosa National Park and other neighbouring concessionaires. LevasFlor employees are locally recruited and encouraged to join the evening school in the fight against illiteracy. Since 2019, there is also a day school and library inside the concession for their children. LevasFlor has its own clinic, treating not only its employees but also members from the neighbouring villages, as well as HIV and Malaria campaigns in conjunction with the local district. LevasFlor concession contains a number of tropical hardwood species commercialised and available at varying quantities. To date LevasFlor has mainly supplied the local market, supplying the refurbishment of regional railways with sustainable sleepers, but also preparing to serve the European market. Examples of product lines are: furniture, pre fab houses, flooring in parquet blocks, decking boards, furniture wood, planks or rough sawn timber. LevasFlor – a unique, sustainable and reliable supplier of forest products with a contribution to environmental and social improvement far beyond its own operations.
