Notes: Armed succulent shrub 1 m with copious milky latex. Branches grey, angled, with 8 rows of spines. Leaves at ends of branches; margin and midrib below red; lower leaves dull red autumn tinted, particularly below. Peduncle viscid, tinged red above. Bracts bright red. Labelled var. hislopii.
