Description:
Terrestrial herb 18–65 cm tall, growing from pherical or ellipsoid tubers c. 10 mm long. Leaves 3–6, lanceolate, 5–13.5 cm long, decreasing in size up the stem. Inflorescence laxly 2–12-flowered; sepals and petals yellow-green, lip dull maroon with a white or greenish margin. Dorsal sepal lanceolate to ovate, 6–11 mm long, projecting over the column; lateral sepals spreading, oblique, slightly longer than dorsal sepal. Petals lanceolate, 4–9 mm long. Lip oblong-spathulate, 5–9 mm long, entire, convex with a large hairy callus in the lower centre.
Notes: Var. stolzii occurs in Malawi and the Nyika area in Zambia. It differs in having ciliate margins on the petals.
Derivation of specific name: stolzii: after Adolf Ferdinand Stolz (1871-1917), German missionary and plant collector in Angola and Malawi.
glabripetala: glabrous petals, referring to the petals lacking ciliate margins in this variety.
Habitat: Damp montane grassland, among rocks on seepage slopes.
