Description:
Terrestrial herb, 25-75 cm tall. Leaves 5-6, linear, up to 75 cm long, fully developed at time of flowering (in this variety). Inflorescence laxly few to many-flowered. Flowers somewhat drooping, not opening wide, often self-pollinating. Sepals olive-green flushed with purple-brown to brown; petals white or dull yellow-green. Lip 3-lobed, white or dull yellow-green; mid lobe with a white or pale yellow crest of papillae. Spur not swollen, 2-4 mm long, incurved.
Notes: See var. hians and var. inaequalis for comparison.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: Various types of grassland both at lower altitudes and in montane areas. Also in vleis, bogs and high rainfall woodland.

Flowering time:Dec - Feb
Worldwide distribution: DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, South Africa, Yemen and Madagascar.
