Description:
Scrambling or climbing shrub, rarely a small tree, up to 5 m. high; stems grey-green to olive-green and 4-lined when young, becoming reddish-brown and eventually greyish, with numerous whitish lenticels. Leaves oblong to elliptic (rarely obovate), 3·2-11 cm long, dark green or rarely yellowish-green, with 5–7 lateral veins and reticulate venation prominent on both sides; margin obtusely toothed; petiole 5–14 mm long; stipules lanceolate to filiform, c. 1·5 mm long, entire or more or less laciniate, eventually deciduous. Flowers 8–40 in rather lax simple axillary inflorescences; pedicels 1–2·5 mm long. Sepals broadly ovate to semicircular, 0·5–1 mm. long, yellow, veined green, with ciliolate-denticulate margin. Petals ovate-oblong to semicircular, 1–1·5 mm long, with a short claw, pale yellow or greenish-yellow, usually veined green, with ciliolate margin. Disk single, concave, annular or slightly 5-lobed. Stamens 3, with filaments narrow, scarcely broadened towards the base. Mericarps oblong, 5·3–6·1 cm long, flattened, olive-green to brown, 5–8-seeded, shallowly ribbed.

Derivation of specific name: volkensii: after G. Volkens who collected on Mt Kilimanjaro 1892, 1893 and 1894
Habitat: In thickets, dry forest and dense woodland.
