Common names: Milk-rope (English)
Status: Native
Leafless perennial twiner or climber. Stems smooth, succulent with milky latex. Flowers in small sessile clusters at the nodes. Corolla green with lobes spreading or reflexed; corona white with outer lobes connected and erect. Fruit a pair of slender, pointed follicles.
Notes: This species is somewhat similar to Sarcostemma viminale, particularly the riverine twining form. That species has larger flowers on longer pedicels with petals not reflexed and a very different corona.
Derivation of specific name: gerrardii: named after William Tyler Gerrard (c.1831-1866), British botanical collector in Natal, Madagascar and Australia.
Habitat: In dry woodland and scrub, on rocky outcrops, in sandy or clayey depressions, often in slightly disturbed sites.
