A weak-stemmed smallish shrub to 1.2 m high, rarely up to 3 m high; stems dark grey, erect and sparsely branched or arching. Leaves opposite, somewhat clustered towards the ends of branchlets, oblong-ovate to broadly ovate or oblong, up to 30 cm long, smaller just below the inflorescence, more or less cordate or sometimes rounded at the base, thinly textured, sparsely pubescent above, more densely so beneath particularly on the veins; margin entire to remotely and irregularly bluntly toothed or crenate; petiole 1–16 cm long. Inflorescences terminal, subglobose, 3–5.5 cm in diameter(without the corollas), surrounded by the upper leaves; bracts lanceolate to elliptic, 1.2–2.5 cm long, abruptly narrowed into a stipe-like base, pubescent. Corolla white; tube sometimes greenish-white 7.5–12.5 cm long, rather curved above, with short glandular hairs outside. Stamens exserted for 3.5–4 cm; style greenish. Fruit 12 mm long, purple to nearly black.
Notes: Another species often confused Clerodendrum capitatum (Willd.) Schumach. & Thonn. which is not found in Zimbabwe. That species differs by being a scrambling shrub or liane with spine-like modified petiole bases, having a different indumentum, smaller and more cordate leaves and shorter petioles as well as somewhat different bracts.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In riverine forest and in thickets along rivers, dambo margins, lake shores and on termite mounds, also in mixed woodland, on Kalahari sand and alluvial soils. Always in shaded situations.
