Common names:
Status: Native
This subspecies differs from subsp. monteiroi in the occasional presence of rhizomes, which branch below ground and form spreading plants, the loosely spiralled tubercles and the broadly deltoid bracts c. 3 × 3 cm.
Notes: There is confusion over the spelling of the specific name with monteiroi being used by some authorities and monteiri by others. Although Leach (1979) defended the use of monteiri, we have adopted the name monteiroi as this seems to be generally accepted.
Derivation of specific name: monteiroi: named for Joachim Monteiro, a Portuguese colonial official and naturalist; ramosa: branched.
